Getting a Card

Getting a library card is easy – just determine which category you fall into and click on the link to see what type of identification you need to bring to the Circulation Desk.  In just a few minutes, you can begin checking out Library materials, including books, DVDs, audio books, music CDs, and CD-ROMs.

Please note: The Southfield Public Library does not sell Library cards. Southfield Public Library cards are issued only to those who pay taxes to support the Library. We do offer some reciprocal services to TLN member Library patrons, but not to Michicard patrons. Non-card holders may use materials in the building, but may not borrow any Library materials.

Beginning Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012 all non-residents will be limited to 25 items per card at a time.  Oak Park residents will be brought up from the current limit of 10 to 25. This was a decision reached by the Southfield Public Library Board of Directors and was necessitated by the need to protect shrinking resources for the residents of Southfield. Your responsibilities as a Cardholder:

  • To assume financial responsibility for all materials checked out with your Library card, including paying for lost or damaged materials, overdue fines and processing fees.  Fines and fees not paid within the prescribed period of time may be sent to a collection agency.
  • To give immediate notice of a lost or stolen Library card. Your Library card should be treated like a credit card, because anyone who uses it has access to your library record and borrowing privileges.
  • To notify the Library of any change of address, phone number or e-mail address.
  • To abide by the policies of the Library and the Library’s Code of Conduct. Responsibility for the choice of borrowed materials rests with the cardholder or, if under the age of 18, with the cardholder’s parent.

Loan Periods

  • Most Library Materials: 3 Weeks
  • Items with a Waiting List: 2 Weeks
  • Films on Video/DVD: 1 Week
  • CD-ROM Software: 1 Week

Avoid overdue charges by renewing your materials online or by telephone. Have your Library card ready and either go here (any time) or call (248) 796-4208 (during open hours).

Most items are renewable — you may renew a maximum of two times. The following items are not renewable:

  • Items with a waiting list
  • Feature films on VHS/DVD
  • CD-ROM software
  • Seasonal Items

Fines & Charges

  • .20 per day for most Library materials.
  • .25 per day for Audio Books and Music CDs.
  • 1.00 per day for Videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs and Interlibrary Loans.
  • Replacement cost, plus a processing fee, will be charged for lost or damaged materials.

Borrowing privileges will be suspended:

  • If the amount owed exceeds the maximum allowable.
  • If two or more overdue notices have been sent for any one item.
  • Long overdue accounts may be sent to a collection agency and credit reported.

The Library Privacy Act 455 of 1982 protects the confidentiality of Library users’ records.  The records of Library materials you request or borrow cannot be disclosed to anyone without your consent unless ordered by a court of law.
