Documenting a family’s connection to relatives who lived as slaves before the US Civil War is a challenging but an increasingly possible task. This talk with Professor De Witt S. Dykes, Jr. of the History Department at Oakland University, will explore how to begin.
He will discuss key information needed to maximize success, information available in national, state and local records, as well as how to balance general historical accounts, local county histories, court and legal documents with private family papers to uncover the most information.
